Everyone, thank you so much for stopping in! As some of you already know, I’m working on a Ph.D. since last fall, and the workload has become increasingly intense as time wears on. I’ve been doing lots of writing, just not nearly enough of the kind I’d like. I’ll still be back to check on you though every few weeks (or maybe, sadly, months), and to leave whatever I’ve been working on, when I have something new to share.

Thanks again for your encouragement, and, especially, for your poetry!

Yes, Dhyan, cross-cultural relationships teach us much. This poem was actually from over a year ago, and I just stumbled upon it again, so I put it out here. I had been for 3 or 4 years with a “foreigner,” and I wrote this a few months after our relationship ended. This poem is also about the fact that he used to criticize me for wanting to be a writer, laughed at the hobby. As I said, we didn’t speak the same language. Understanding is important, but be careful to respect your own boundaries when you compromise in the name of cultural sensitivity.

i love and appreicate so much inter national, langauge, cultural realtionship. to me, they are so demending, always asking for more understanding, more relaxing, more watching of how i act, what i say, how i respond. they contain so much teaching, so many ways to grow and learn, of myself, of my culture, of my parents, of my love and feeelings, and thoughs, of life. and almost never boring.

Hi, Dhyan/fragments! The line in Spanish says, “And I thought that you would never understand (it).” (The ex-partner who inspired this was a native speaker of Spanish, so I was playing around with the disjuncture of communication.)

Strong words that create vivid scenes. I do ‘get’ the violence — emotional, mostly, making me think of the battered woman’s syndrome (BWS) — which reminds me of scenes from the 2005 film “The Quiet” starring Elisha Cuthbert and Camilla Belle.

I especially like the effect of the italicized lines — whisper-like, yet all the more threatening (made my arms shiver).

and for the poem…. it hold much… i just love the first line, it sets everything in motion. importent issue and your statment as well.

Haha, it pulls you in! I’m not surprised that that’s where you start your studies after extensive traveling. As an undergraduate student, I studied Anthropology as well. I chose sociology for grad school in part because I felt it would allow me to serve greater numbers of people. But I still love anthro! Glad to discover a fellow lover of humanity and student of society on WordPress.

i don’t mind that bit. last 8 years i have been traveling around, for now, and first after all those years, i am kind of based, in munich for the time,and funnly enough, i have started taking some uni courses, antropology and sociolgy to start with.
